After all the competition, special shows, gospel sing, mass sing, dedication of the new headquarters and other planned activities, it is such fun to attend the Chorditorium (afterglow) on Saturday evening. All competition is completed and winners announced so it is a relaxed time for the quartets to perform and entertain convention attendees without the pressure of scoring points. This year in Nashville it was held in the Renaissance Hotel Grand Ballroom. People gather after the Quartet Finals with a beverage and wait as the quartets arrive and sing a couple of numbers, tell jokes, talk with the crowd and move on to other places for the evening. The first quartet we heard was High Definition from CSD. That made us proud as they placed in the top 15. Others were from the top ten and then we heard O.C. Times who placed first. Such good singing and we heard 4 of the top 5 quartets by the time we left at 1:45 A.M. Quartets continued singing for some time as we saw them coming into the room as we headed for some shut eye and the trip toward Manhattan the next afternoon. The Chorditorium is a fun time for all as we are able to hear a little more barbershop harmony. |

Convention Memories By Janet Kiser |
|
The 2008 convention in Nashville was the tenth International Convention we have attended. What is it about the experience that keeps us returning? In addition to the obvious – the best barbershop singing in the world – it’s the truly international flavor of the event. It feels good to stand as the national anthems from other countries are sung. We’re proud that the largely American audience responds with enthusiastic applause when the quartets and choruses from Canada, Germany, Great Britain and Sweden perform, and we’re glad that a young quartet from Sweden won the Collegiate Quartet Contest. We also enjoy spending quality time with fellow Barbershoppers from the Manhattan Chapter, in addition to meeting new people from around the world. During intermission of the AIC Show, we chatted with the lady sitting behind us, whose name tag identified her as being from Ohio. When she learned where we are from, she said, “Oh, my brother lives on Hudson St. in Manhattan.” It really is a small world, isn’t it? |
