We have another big decision to make in the next couple of weeks. Last year at this time we decided to participate in the Fall Chorus Competition at the District Convention. We had not competed for a few years and we felt it was time to evaluate our progress. We polled the chorus and had a satisfactory level of participation, went to Kansas City, and accomplished each goal that we had set. The major accomplishment was that we, as a chorus, committed to each other to learn how to sing better, not just compete, and we succeeded in that effort. We even saw and heard the results as a carry-over to our Spring Show. Now we have that opportunity again. On June 19th, your section leader is going to ask you again if you will commit to the extra work it takes to compete at the fall contest. Once again, if you like the idea of our chorus improving and you being a part of it, you can inform your section leader at that time. Our board has approved the idea, and our director has committed to the task…providing we have enough singers who will participate. Here are some things for you to think about before your section leader approaches you. Reasons for our chorus to participate in the fall contest: -Helps immensely to improve the singing quality of our chorus…resulting in more fun and enjoyment for everyone. -Satisfaction of setting a goal and achieving it. -Getting to work with outside clinicians with specific goals in mind. -Builds and solidifies the camaraderie in the chorus. -You, through this effort, will improve as a singer. -We get to hear the top choruses and quartets in the society, and some of them are the top choruses and quartets in the society. Reasons not to participate in the contest. -The contest in held in Cedar Rapids…a long distance to travel. (Transportation will be provided by the chapter for those who want or need it.) |

-Participating as a chorus would require at least one night staying over in a hotel room. (We can sleep two to four guys to a room, if necessary, as this would be an individual expense.) -Cost of food would also be an individual expense. (However, you have to eat at home as well.) -Extra (a few) rehearsals will probably be necessary, and perhaps a Saturday morning or two to work with a clinician. You may have other reasons for participating in the contest (or not participating). But, please think about the possibility and be prepared to respond to your section leader on June 19th. Oh yes, the District Convention (contest) is on the weekend of 10 – 12 October.♪ |

Summer will be here in a week or so and that always puts me in a picnic mood. Summer is also when The Little Apple Chorus sings at Churches in Manhattan and neighboring communities. Sunday, July 13th the LAC will sing In Westmoreland and Wamego. After the Church singing we will meet at Black Jack Hills west of Wamego for a picnic and some good fellowship and probably some good singing. The menu will include pulled pork, turkey, BBQ baked beans, AuGraten potatoes, Iced tea, and a roll. Any desserts that you would like to bring will be greatly appreciated! Black Jack Hills is located 5 mi west of Wamego and South of Hwy 24. Turn South, at Mile Marker 326 on Vineyard Road and go South 1.3 mi then West (Right) .2 mi to the entrance and turn Left and go to the end of the road. Even if you don’t plan to sing at Church all members are welcome to attend the picnic. I’ll need a head count by July 6 so let me know on Thursday evening or call 785-494-2472 daytime or 785-456-2707 evening. My e-mail is: flintrv@wamego.net .♪ |
