Talk about a year of performances! We started with our quartets, including 3 new ones, performing Singing Valentines and ending with the chorus performing seven new Christmas songs -- four of which were performed with the Wamego Dutch Mill Sweet Adeline Chorus at their show. Between these two events, the chorus performed -- its Spring Show SINGSPIRATION, with the Manhattan Municipal Band, 13 worship services of churches on three Sundays, patriotic songs at a special D-Day Celebration, the American Legion Regional Convention and the Manhattan American Legion. Members worked hard to improve their singing and performing. They participated in sectionals, helped each other learn words and notes, and participated in a day-long chapter retreat with clinician Jim Bagby. The chapter chorus performed in a very strong contest with a solid B, according to CSD Contest and Judging Officer Jim Bagby. Additionally, members grew from attending a District Leadership Academy, the Workshop on Compellingly Attractive Chapter Meetings, and Harmony University. Our chapter promoted barbershop harmony to youth. In March a class was presented by a member at the Wamego Arts Fair at the Wamego Middle School. In October members provided brochures about the Barbershop Harmony Society and showed a DVD of high-quality barbershop performances to college vocal music students and professors who attended a regional competition. This competition was held under the auspices of the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS). Our ladies are due a lot thank yous for their support and encouragement of our barbershop performing arts organization and yes, our hobby. Everything you do is appreciated from helping with show costumes and helping back stage at the show, doing the make-up at the show and convention, and the refreshments for special events on Thursday evenings. It was a special July evening celebrating with Carol Hanson and with her birthday cake and ice cream sandwiches when we had our joint chapter meeting with the Topeka Chapter. Also, three ladies as well as the 23 members and one exchange student contributed one or more articles for the InCider Newsletter published by our award winning editor, Karen Nanninga. Our members contribute to Harmony Foundation which has a large youth emphasis and they are willing to participate in District and Society activities and conventions. Our chapter might be called on to do more in the future, such as,. ▪reach out to youth with a barbershop youth festival ▪ reach out, where it can, to help other chapters ▪host a CSD spring convention ▪keep a finger on the potential in the reduction in vocal music in public schools Thank you to all who participated in the chapter’s 2009 program. There is a spirit of cooperation and encouragement that is important to the successes of our chapter. This is one person who is looking forward to supporting our new president, officers (some new), music team and members in 2010.♪ |
