‘Performing with their hearts,’ and ‘glorify human lives’ are themes that have guided the performances of those artists who were honored at the 2008 Kennedy Center Honors program. To paraphrase what one presenter said: ‘Music is what frees our hearts to touch people’s hearts.’ No doubt we all remember performances when we have touched the hearts of our audience. One such experience occurred when the chorus performed “TAPS” in a Veterans Day program for the American Legion. A few years ago, a neighbor said that when she came to our spring shows, ‘she walked in and floated out.’ Our Chapter is blessed with a music leadership team who helps us understand the music to reach the hearts of our audiences. Ken Lang, our Director, coaches, teaches and directs us how to perform each phrase to bring out the meaning of the composer’s song. Don Thomson, our Associate Director, asks us to sing with depth and fullness in our voices to communicate the song’s message. Myron Calhoun, our Assistant Director, reminds us to sing with vitality so that our faces, body language and voices match in performing our songs. Loren Alexander, Vice President of Music and performance, is taking a leadership role in coordinating our chapter’s efforts to continually improve our craft and our musical performances. He has met with the directors and will meet with other leaders in our music program. He has been working to develop a double quartet with the short range goal of having one quartet or both qualify for performing in Singing Valentines. Sam Kvasnica has enjoyed making suggestions to these quartets as they develop. Stay tuned. I hope you will see changes as we go through this year and into next year. We can continue having fun singing our show repertoire, special performances repertoire throughout the year, as quartets, and in Woodshedding. Please let us know of your interests as we continue to follow our tradition of touching people’s hearts. ♪ |

(Continued from page one) big part in determining the quartets, i.e. one quartet all come from north of town, and the other guys live in town. Wouldn't it work well to have another guy with lots of experience to play the role of coach? Well, Sam Kvasnica agreed to do so, met with us each time, and gave us great criticism, supporting us and advising us. Now we go into tryouts for becoming Valentines quartets - this February or next February or??. Wish us luck in our work to improve our skills as we in the current double quartet continue our fun. I hope to generate another double quartet soon. At present we have the following guys working together: Loren Alexander (Organizer), Bart Bartholomew, Steve Cross, Dave Fink, Sam Kvasnica (Coach), Terry Nanninga, Tom Phillips, John Schlender, Terry Smith, and John Trail. Now, can we ring a chord or two? ♪ |
