Just a couple of weeks ago our show was six months away. Now, it seems, that it is only a few weeks away! Both statements are true. Just a couple of weeks ago, it seemed like we had a lot of music to learn. Now, it seems, that we still have a lot of music to learn, but with only a short time to perfect it. Again, depending on who is reading this article, both statements are true. Also true, however, is that we are very much ahead of schedule from where we have been in previous show preparations. Distressing, is the fact which I am sure you have noticed, is that Ken is having to teach the same things almost every week! The teaching of a point of concern, or a passage of music a couple of times is reasonable, but having to teach the same thing over and over week after week is going to get kind of tiresome for our director, and also for those singers who do not need to be taught over and over. What can help us is that we look at the music between rehearsals so that the music doesn’t appear to be new to us each week. Another thing that will help is to try each week to get off the music. Yes, I know having the music in front of you makes you feel more comfortable, and most of us like to feel comfortable. And, not looking at the music will cause us to make mistakes and none of us likes to make mistakes (it makes us uncomfortable). Putting the music down, however will allow us to identify which parts of the song(s) we need more work on. Try it! We all will benefit from this collective effort. I am really excited about this year’s show (it is our 2009 show, not 2008 as the rehearsal schedule indicates L). In the first part of the show we will be showing respect for the Christian Holy Days of Easter by singing some sacred and semi-sacred songs; in the second half of the show we will move into some more traditional Barbershop music, and then for the grand finale we will crescendo into, three very powerful songs combining with the Wamego Sweet Adelines chorus. Our goal is to touch the hearts and souls of our audience, and this program has every element in it to do just that. Between now and then we have to learn the music (that’s our job, not Ken’s); respond to Ken’s directions and interpretation of each song; and to sell it to the audience through the expressions in both our faces and our bodies. We must also be making our list of relatives, friends, neighbors, etc. whom we want to make sure knows about the show. Tickets will be available in about six weeks, and we need to really get behind this effort to fill the McCain auditorium. See you on Thursday evening! ♪ |

The Chapter Board met Monday January 12th at Westbank Townhomes Clubhouse. The chapter had to pay the caterer for food wasted, because some members signed up to attend the Installation Banquet and then did not come. As a result the board voted to establish a policy requiring pre-payment at any event which involves catered food. The board established a new uniform policy. The chapter will share equally with new members the cost of uniforms. This includes the summer shirt with our logo, the black tux jacket, pants, purple vest, white tux shirt, red cummerbund and red tie. The exception is that youth members who are still growing would rent the tux. Also members who plan only a short term membership could rent rather than buy the tux. Because Valentines Day is on a Saturday this year, we will be delivering Singing Valentines on Friday the 13th and Saturday the 14th. The people putting together the roses will do so on Thursday afternoon, February 12th. The quartets will be dispatched from First Presbyterian Church. As usual, there will be a Valentine Party on the 14th. The party will be at Aggieville Pizza Hut on Saturday evening. Hopefully the crowd in Aggieville from the KU-KSU basketball game will have subsided by party time. For the Singing Valentines Ken Lyle is looking for someone to be in charge of sending digital photographs by e-mail or otherwise to the intended recipients. If you have some computer skills and would like to help, contact Ken. Chapter members are welcome to attend Board Meetings. Again this year those meetings will usually be held on the second Monday of each month. The normal meeting place is the Westbank Townhomes Clubhouse.♪ |
