Congratulations to Karen Nanninga -- David Haase, editor of the CSD Serenade, honored Karen Nanninga, our own chapter bulletin editor, at the CSD Spring Convention for her entry in the CSD Electronic Bulletin Contest.  Last year PROBE (Public Relations Officers and Bulletin Editors association) changed the rules for the contest requiring every district to have a contest to determine which entry advances to the PROBE international contest.  This is what David says in the upcoming issue of the Serenade:  "Even though Karen was the only entry in the contest, it should be noted that Karen was runner up in the PROBE International Electronic Bulletin Contest last summer. Karen publishes an excellent chapter bulletin and should be commended for her tireless work for the Manhattan, Kansas chapter."

Congratulations to Chuck Marr -- Don Blank, CSD's President, announced May 11, that Chuck Marr accepted his request to be the District's CSLT (Chapter Support and Leadership Training) Administrator position.   Chuck's leadership and people skills will go along ways in organizing and coordinating the Leadership Academies (formerly known as COTS) of the District.  Don said in his email note that Chuck will be putting together one of the best leadership academies that we've ever had.  The Leadership Academy will be in St. Joseph, MO February 5 and 6, 2010 in combination with the Top Gun School.♪

Congratulations from our president, via CSD

Ken Lyle provided leadership chairing the Singing Valentine program starting last Fall.  The administration of SV went smoothly and he did it quietly and effectively.  Now we have another Mr. Singing Valentine.  Then in April, Ken continued by chairing the Performance Day committee for the chapter's Spring show.  Thank you Ken for stepping up and sharing your talent, time and quiet leadership skills with us.♪

President Harvey Kiser presented Ken Lyle with the Barbershopper Of The Month award at a recent  chapter meeting.

I’ve been a Little Apple Barbershopper for just about a year now, and it’s been a year of firsts for me.  First time having a closer relationship with the music than merely listening to it; first time singing with a bunch of guys for whom the music is more than just a pleasant way to pass a Thursday evening; first time quartetting and participating in the Singing Valentine program; first time on the risers in a barbershop show; first afterglow, and first quartet experience in front of a large (and sympathetic) audience.  What a great year it has been!

Not only all that, but I’ve had the opportunity to meet and become friends with a lot of great people who have supported and encouraged my every attempt to learn and improve.  I’ve got a long way to go yet in my discovery of barbershop, but I expect it will continue to be a fun trip.  Just wanted to say thanks to everyone

Many firsts

Membership begins with me" is a simplistic way of saying that the Barbershop Society and our chapter's perpetuation depend totally on each member introducing another man to the joy of Barbershop singing.  No one else can do it for us.

Therefore, I urge each Manhattan Chapter Member to make personal contact with an individual who would enjoy the opportunity to share his voice in our process of creating great harmony in the barbershop style.  Please call the person whose name you have given us and encourage that person to give us one Thursday evening in May to learn how much fun and relaxation comes from singing with friends and soon-to-be friends.♪
